3M Contamination Lawsuit Claims Birth Defects

A lawsuit filed by the Minnesota Attorney General claims that 3M Co. dumped chemicals in groundwater for years, leading to an increase in babies with low birth weights. The lawsuit was filed in a Minneapolis-metro area courtroom. In addition to the birth injury claims, it indicates that the alleged chemical dumping led to an increase in cancer and infertility among residents. Court documents indicate that a study done by a professor at the University of California, Berkley, found that there was a 30 percent increase in low birth weights and premature births compared to neighboring communities, in Washington County and Oakdale from 2001 and 2016. ABC News reported that until the 1970s, 3M disregarded chemicals used to make items like fire-fighting foam, stain repellents, non-stick cookware and other household and industrial products landfills in Oakdale, Woodbury and Lake Elmo.
