The Air Force recently paid $5 million for a 2004 birth malpractice incident that took place in a Navy Hospital in Okinawa, Japan. A family was stationed at the base when the wife gave birth to their daughter using a nurse midwife. After the wife’s uterus ruptured (depriving the baby of oxygen) the midwife did not call an obstetrician. Because of the midwife’s negligence, the child is severely disabled. The child is now blind, suffering from spastic cerebral palsy, and has to be fed through a tube implanted in her stomach.  The money from the settlement will go in a trust to pay for her medical bills.
