For Jude Countryman, who was born with his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck, cerebral palsy affects the nerves that control his mouth and tongue. While his father says that Jude is neurologically intact and a bright kid, Jude struggles with talking and eating. When his parents didn’t see enough progress with speech and occupational therapy, they decided to turn to a device designed for stroke patients.

This device, known as a vitalstim involves a small electrical current that contracts Jude’s facial muscles and strengthens them. Patients use the vitalism device three times a week for about an hour in combination with speech therapy. “The more we can eat and swallow and practice that movement while we’ve got those electrodes on, the better results you’ll see,” speech pathologist Poly Bohannon said.
For Erin Belieu, whose son has cerebral palsy, it was when she realized when her son was talking and “something was different about his face and I couldn’t quite figure out what it was at first. But then I realized his upper lip was moving when he was talking. I was just like, ‘wow.’”
