Birth Injury Attorneys Applaud his Efforts to Raise Awareness

Last month, a teenager trudged 40 miles across Michigan with his 7-year-old brother on his back. The younger boy has cerebral palsy, a degenerative disorder which prevents him from walking on his own.

The teenager initially raised $350 selling green wristbands to promote Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month at his school. Inspired by a dream his mother had of him carrying his brother to Mackinac, the family’s vacation spot, he hatched the idea of the long distance walk to spread his message beyond the campus. This led to months of preparation for carrying his fifty pound brother on his back. “We want kids to understand,” he said.

Other family members triumphantly joined the pair for the final miles of the trip, which almost came to an abrupt end when the younger boy’s legs started chafing. After a brief pause to reposition him, the brothers completed their mission. All in all, the journey took 30 hours.

The family hopes that the adventure will grab the attention of doctors around the world, illuminating the need for greater innovation in mobility aids and medical procedures.

What Causes Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a disorder of movement, muscle tone or posture caused by trauma or injury to the developing brain, either before or during birth. CP is not a specific diagnosis, but a blanket term, considered a description of a wide but clearly defined set of neurological and physical issues.

More than three quarters of CP cases result from issues that occur during pregnancy, but as many as 10 percent of diagnoses are the direct result of preventable trauma inflicted during childbirth. When trauma during birth was preventable and caused an injury to an innocent party, this is medical malpractice.

The truth is that most women like and trust their OB/GYNs and healthcare providers. This is understandable. Medical malpractice, however, cannot and should not be ignored. If an infant is injured, the responsible party must be held accountable. If your child has developed cerebral palsy due to medical malpractice, remember that filing a lawsuit is not a personal statement–it’s about having the resources, care and help you need to ensure that your child lives the best life possible.
