Couples Sue Fertility Clinic Following Fragile X Births

Two couples have successfully sued a New York fertility doctor and clinic after their children were born with Fragile X syndrome. According to ABC News, two children were born with the genetic disorder that causes intellectual and developmental delays, even though their parents were told their egg donors were genetically screened. The parents are seeking compensation for raising the children with disabilities and medical costs. After the children were born, the egg donors were tested and found to be carriers of the Fragile X mutation, according to ABC News. Attorneys for the fertility clinic attempted to argue that the lawsuits were filed too late. However, the New York Court of Appeals ruled that the usual circumstances of the cases made them different than most malpractice cases. 3M Contamination Lawsuit Claims Birth Defects

A lawsuit filed by the Minnesota Attorney General claims that 3M Co. dumped chemicals in groundwater for years, leading to an increase in babies with low birth weights. The lawsuit was filed in a Minneapolis-metro area courtroom. In addition to the birth injury claims, it indicates that the alleged chemical dumping led to an increase in cancer and infertility among residents. Court documents indicate that a study done by a professor at the University of California, Berkley, found that there was a 30 percent increase in low birth weights and premature births compared to neighboring communities, in Washington County and Oakdale from 2001 and 2016. ABC News reported that until the 1970s, 3M disregarded chemicals used to make items like fire-fighting foam, stain repellents, non-stick cookware and other household and industrial products landfills in Oakdale, Woodbury and Lake Elmo. Mother Loses Limbs after Giving Birth

According to, a Canadian woman developed an infection after giving birth that resulted in the amputation of her limbs. The website reported that the woman, age 33, was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis days after she gave birth to a child in Nova Scotia. The woman ended up spending seven months at the hospital after developing the infection and required multiple surgeries including the removal of her arms, legs, and a hysterectomy. The flesh-eating bacteria reportedly developed after the woman suffered a tear during childbirth that required sutures. Her family has allegedly filed a lawsuit claiming that she went to the hospital after experiencing pain in her stomach, but was sent home when doctors thought she was constipated.
