Could Premature Birth Problems Be Helped By Naturally-Produced Glue?

Birth Trauma Attorneys Look at an Exciting New Development Fetoscopy is a procedure performed which allows an obstetrician access to the developing fetus during pregnancy. A tiny incision is made in the mother’s abdomen, and a fetoscope—a long, wand-like instrument with a minuscule camera in its end—is inserted into the amniotic cavity. Using this method, a doctor can also monitor the umbilical cord and the fetal side of the placenta. Fetoscopy allows surgeons to check the fetus for anatomical abnormalities and makes medical intervention possible in cases of emergency. Unfortunately, a common problem in fetoscopy is the rupturing of the fetal membrane—the sac containing the developing baby—during the procedure. To make room for the fetoscope, a pathway to the fetal sac must be created using a device with a sharp tip. Far too often, this tool punctures the fetal membrane, which can cause a leak of amniotic fluid. This in…

Birth Injury Lawyers Examine Autism Studies

Two recent studies examined how factors in labor and pregnancy can cause or reduce the risk of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Autism and Folic Acid One study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), found that pregnant women who take folic acid during pregnancy reduce the chances of their children developing autism by up to 40 percent. Most of us ingest a form of folic acid quite frequently; in the U.S., many grain and cereal products contain folic acid supplements. Folic acid is a B vitamin that encourages healthy cell growth. The study examined births in Norway, where the consumption of folic acid is not as widespread as it is here, and found that children whose mothers who did not take the B vitamin supplements had increased rates of ASD, Aspergers and other developmental disabilities. Autism and Premature Birth While folic acid may decrease the risk of…

New Study IDs Premature Birth Risks

Researchers in Australia have identified several factors that may put pregnant women at risk of a premature birth. According to the study led by Gustaaf Dekker, MD, Ph.D at the University of Adelaide, women may give birth early if they: Smoke marijuana Have a history of vaginal bleeding Have mothers with a history of pre-eclampsia Have mothers with diabetes Have high blood pressure Are very thin (body mass index under 20) Have a family history of babies with low birth weights Have a short cervix “Better understanding the risk factors involved in preterm birth moves us another step forward in potentially developing a test – genetic or otherwise – that will help us to predict with greater accuracy the risk of preterm birth,” Dekker said. “Our ultimate aim is to safeguard the lives of babies and their health in the longer term.” Dekker studied 3,234 women, and nearly 5 percent…
