After the US Food and Drug Administration found that 95 percent of baby foods it tested contained heavy metals, a New York Senator has called for a federal probe. Birth Trauma

According to the New York Post, Sen. Chuck Schumer has demanded an investigation into the findings. The shocking report, which came out earlier this month, indicated that one in four baby foods contained arsenic, mercury, lead or cadmium.

“The report is very, very troubling,” Schumer said, according to the Post. “Now, we all know how bad lead can hurt a toddler, but when it’s a little baby it’s even worse.”

Schumer called on the FDA to enact a testing program that establishes standards for heavy metals contained in foods.

Following Schumer’s demands, the FDA released a statement:

“The FDA is committed to helping ensure the safety of foods in the U.S., particularly those eaten by our most vulnerable populations, like infants and children,” the FDA said. “Our work includes actively monitoring levels of arsenic, lead and other elements, which occur naturally in some foods, and working to identify the most effective and feasible ways to reduce exposure to these elements from food.”

Defective Products Aimed at Children Are Unacceptable

It is unacceptable and says a lot about consumer safety in our country when 95 percent of baby foods tested contain heavy metals. These metals have been linked to cognitive growth problems in children and this could have a huge impact on our society moving forward.
