About Baclofen Pumps

Baclofen pumps, also known as Intrathecal Baclofen Therapy (IBT), help thousands of people with muscle spasms, including people with cerebral palsy. The baclofen pump itself is a small circular disc roughly the size and shape of a tuna can. Surgeons implant the pump into the patient’s abdomen. The pump releases controlled doses of baclofen into the patient’s spinal cord, which helps keep muscle spasms under control. One benefit of using a baclofen pump is that doctors can easily accommodate the device for each patient. For example, if the patient’s spasms are bad at night and mild during the day, the baclofen pump can be calibrated to deliver stronger doses when they are needed most. Different patients require different amounts of medication, and the pump allows doctors to make these modifications as needed. IBT is a fairly safe form of therapy. The Food and Drug Administration approved the device in 1996,…

Boy With Cerebral Palsy Learns to Walk After Controversial Stem Cell Procedure

One of the most difficult aspects of having a child with cerebral palsy is the uncertainty. Doctors are often unable to predict whether a child may be able to walk, talk or live a life that is at all independent of a caretaker. A young boy from North Dakota, however, is surprising his parents, teachers and doctors and making huge improvements since undergoing a controversial stem cell procedure. For the first time in his life, he is able to take steps without the aid of crutches. The seven-year-old has spastic diplegia, a form of cerebral palsy that results in stiff, twisted and spastic leg muscles, often resulting from birth trauma. He underwent stem-cell therapy almost two years ago, an experimental procedure that replaced damaged cells with healthy ones. Doctors believe the treatment, which was performed with the help of $20,000 in community donations, has helped him with his speech and…

Girl Injured at Birth Awarded $1.314 million

This summer an Iowa jury awarded the family of a little girl $1.314 million for birth injuries she sustained during a poorly performed delivery. According to the Asher family, the on-call OBGYN Specialist at their daughter’s delivery should have recognized that her shoulder was stuck behind her mother’s pelvic bone. Recognizing the problem, he should have recommended a caesarian section or attempted to free the shoulder. Instead, he went ahead with the delivery, using “excessive traction” to free the child. Injuries to the left arm became apparent immediately after delivery. The mistakes during delivery resulted in the girl having permanent injuries to the brachial plexus, a network of nerves that start in the spinal cord and control movements in the shoulder, arm and hand. Injuries like this are most common in sports and during childbirth, often leaving the arm without any function. The daughter of the Asher family will have…
