The Risk of Cerebral Palsy Can Increase with Premature Birth

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine indicates that premature babies are at a higher risk for server disabilities, such as cerebral palsy. These disabilities can affect the physical, mental and social aspects of a child’s development, causing them life-long pain and suffering. It is just as important for pregnant women to be aware of the risks associated with premature birth and it is for a physician to monitor a pregnancy for signs of a premature birth. Careful monitoring of a pregnancy can help to identify the warning signs of a premature birth. Once the warning signs are identified, it is the job of the attending physician to take the appropriate actions in order to help prevent potential birth injuries. It is the responsibility of the medical staff to provide a reasonable level of care to both mother and child during a birth. This means that they…

Autism Linked to Premature Birth in Recent Clinical Study

A study published in the medical journal, Pediatrics, indicates that premature babies, or underweight babies, are at a greater risk for autism. Researchers at the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted the study. Babies born before 33 weeks of pregnancy were classified as premature by the researchers for the purpose of the study. Babies born under five pounds were considered underweight. The researchers studied 565 children diagnosed with autism that were born between 1986 and 1993. These children were divided into three different categories: children with autism and one developmental disease, children with autism and more than one developmental disease and children with autism only. The three classifications of children with autism were compared against a control group. The researchers analyzed the connection between autism, birth date and birth weight. Upon analyzing the information, the researchers were able to link the combination of premature birth and…

Medical Device Delays Birth, Could Prevent Birth Traumas

A recently published study indicates that medical devices called pessaries could prevent premature birth, which puts babies at a higher risk of developing conditions like cerebral palsy. Doctors studied 385 pregnant women with short cervixes at five Spanish hospitals. Statistically, women with short cervixes are more likely to go into early labor. Nearly half (192) of the women were treated with the cervical pessary. Overall, fewer women in the pessary group went into premature labor than did women in the non-pessary group (12 in the former, 52 in the latter). Percentagewise, six percent of the pessary group went into early labor, compared to 26 percent of the non-pessary group. The babies born in the non-pessary group had higher rates of low birth weight and respiratory distress syndrome. Some women in the pessary group indicated that the device was painful. On average, the insertion of the device was a four and…
