Andrea and William Dorsheimer’s son was born in the USA Naval Hospital in Florida with severe brain damage. They recently filed a lawsuit blaming the hospital’s negligence for their baby’s injuries; they seek $80 million in damages. Andrea’s doctors decided to administer Pitocin, a drug intended to speed up delivery. We have blogged about Pitocin dangers before. Sometimes it speeds up contractions to the point where it restricts the flow of oxygen to the baby’s brain, which is what appeared to happen here. Two hours after giving Andrea the Pitocin dose, her child showed “non-reassuring signs” of fetal distress that continued for four hours. Parents File $80 Million Suit Against United States for Baby Brain Injury

December 4, 2012Wayne County has recently settled a birth trauma lawsuit filed by a woman who gave birth in jail. Chantrienes Barker went into labor in 1998 while incarcerated. Officers sent her to a hospital, but returned her to jail just two hours later. She and other inmates repeatedly urged guards to return her to the hospital, saying that her labor pains were increasing. She gave birth in jail, and her daughter now suffers from brain damage. Barker sued the county for violating her civil rights, and the county agreed to an $8 million settlement. The County’s Defense Initially, the county said that it was not responsible for the infant’s health due to a landmark abortion ruling. Since Roe V. Wade decided that life did not begin before birth, the county argued, jail officials had no responsibility to provide adequate care to Barker’s unborn child. December 3, 2012You may have seen a video that went viral in October; a 10-year-old girl with cerebral palsy leaves a school bus and crosses the street. Hope Holcomb has a limp, and requires braces to walk. William Bailey, 43, walks behind her and imitates the way she walks. The man’s 9-year-old son does the same. Tricia Knight, Hope’s mother, said that Bailey lives nearby and made her children afraid to play outside. Her daughter was scared to ride the school bus for fear of further bullying. “It makes me sick to think that a grown man would tease a 10-year-old disabled girl that has never done a thing to any of them for any reason, and now she doesn’t want to get on the bus to go to school,” said Mike Knight, Hope’s father.
