John Cena’s Number One Fan with Cerebral Palsy Receives Surprise Visit

WWE wrestler John Cena is no stranger to charity. He set the record for most wishes granted with the Make-a-Wish Foundation back in January of 2012 (300 at the time). Cena recently made a surprise visit to one of his biggest fans – a boy with cerebral palsy named Gary Patterson. Gary and his elementary school classmates were gathered for a school assembly to celebrate Gary’s new wheelchair – a $32,000 custom chair with power controls, supportive cushions and several decals featuring Cena, Gary’s favorite wrestler. Much to Gary’s delight, Cena made a surprise appearance. “When you see the look on Gary’s face, it makes it all worthwhile,” Cena said. ‘Time for a new one’ Jillian Kornick, Gary’s teacher, coordinated both the wheelchair gift and Cena’s appearance. While the procedure is costly and not always successful, it can help children with cerebral palsy make remarkable recoveries. Xander McKinley is a testament to the procedure’s possibility. He was born with cerebral palsy. When was two years old, he could not walk or crawl on his own. Now, four years later, he can stand on his own and even take a few steps. Iowa Settles Birth Trauma Lawsuit for $3.75 Million

The state of Iowa recently settled a birth injury lawsuit for $3.75 million, $2 million of which will be paid up front. According to the lawsuit, employees at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics acted negligently in 2007 when administering Pitocin to then 20-year-old Martha Fountain, which caused her son to suffer brain injuries during birth. As a result, he now suffers from cerebral palsy and other serious medical conditions. Martha reportedly went to UIHC to give birth at the end of a routine, full-term pregnancy. When her baby experienced difficulty descending into the birth canal, hospital staff administered Pitocin, a synthetic version of the hormone oxytocin that is used to induce or speed up labor. According to the lawsuit, UIHC staff failed to determine the frequency and strength of Martha’s contractions before administering the drug, and they continued administering Pitocin even as excessive contractions were causing “significant trauma”…
