Depakote Birth Defect Lawsuit: Spinal Cord Injuries Result in $15 Million Verdict
According to Bloomberg, AbbVie Inc., which manufactured Depakote, has been ordered to pay $15 million to the family of a California boy who was born with severe birth defects. The news outlet reported that an Illinois federal jury delivered the verdict against the drug manufacturer last month. The 10-year-old boy’s mother allegedly took Depakote during her pregnancy to fight bipolar disorder, which her lawyers claim led to the boy being born with spina bifida. The boy has reportedly had to undergo 12 surgeries since birth and is now confined to a wheelchair. The news outlet reports that there are currently 700 pending Depakote lawsuits in U.S. courts arguing children’s birth defects were caused when expecting mothers took the drug and were not warned about its side effects. Do Your Children Suffer From Autism? Abuse Cases Becoming More Prevalent
According to the National Autistic Society (NAS), half of the adults living in the United Kingdom with autism say that someone they know has abused them. The nonprofit said that a survey of 1,300 people with autism showed that more than half had been abused by someone they considered a friend. The group said that this is causing many people with autism to stay at home, because they are afraid of being harassed. The Daily Mail reported that 37 percent of those surveyed also said that they had been manipulated into doing something they did not want to do, while 44 percent said they were afraid of facing abuse outside of the house. A quarter of those polled told the NAS that they have had possessions or money stolen. FDA Sends Out Warning About Unproven Autism Treatments
According to DisabilityScoop.com, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning the public that many products claiming to treat or cure autism do not work and may present serious health risks. The agency sent out a notice at the end of April to consumers saying that it has warned several companies that they may face legal action if they do not stop selling products to people while using false or misleading information. The letter notice reportedly contained information about five therapies, which the FDA said might “carry significant health risks” and commonly rely on false claims: chelation, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, miracle mineral solution, detoxifying clay baths and CocoKefir probiotics products.
