Autistic People More Likely to Suffer From Diabetes and Heart Failure

According to DisabilityScoop.com, a study recently found that adults with autism are at higher risk for a variety of health problems ranging from diabetes and obesity, to heart failure. The web site reported that in a review of insurance records from nearly 23,000 adults, “medical and psychiatric issues are much more prevalent in those with autism as compared to individuals without the developmental disorder.” “Nearly all medical conditions were significantly more common in adults with ASD than controls, including diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders, epilepsy, sleep disorders, dyslipidemia, hypertension and obesity,” researchers at Kaiser Permanente Northern California said in a study summary. According to the Waco Tribune-Herald, Baylor University and McLane Children’s Scott & White are collaborating on a new facility that will attempt to mix diagnostic, therapeutic and clinical services for kids with developmental disabilities.  The paper reported that the facility, the Baylor University Center for Developmental Disabilities, would offer services to children with autism spectrum disorder and Down syndrome, as well as other intellectual disabilities. The facility will be located at the Hillcrest MacArthur Clinic, located at 2201 MacArthur Drive in Waco. The unveiling of the facility was made as Autism Awareness Month kicked off earlier this month. The center will offer individual therapy rooms, a playroom area, small rooms for social skills work groups and a group therapy room. “[The facility] will include the Baylor Autism Resource Clinic, which provides assessments, consultations, social skills-building exercises and other support services for children with autism spectrum disorders,” the Tribune-Herald reported. “It…
