Study Suggests that C-Sections May Not Lessen Cerebral Palsy Risk

According to DisabilityScoop, contrary to popular belief, cesarean sections (C-sections) may not lower the risk of a baby developing cerebral palsy during childbirth. The website reported that a study conducted by the University of Adelaide in Australia, which was published in the December issue of the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology, found that babies delivered via C-section were no less likely to develop cerebral palsy than babies delivered naturally. Pennsylvania Family Awarded $4 Million for Cerebral Palsy Lawsuit

According to the Lehigh Valley Morning Call, a Pennsylvania family was awarded $4 million after an obstetrician caused a child to sustain birth injuries resulting in cerebral palsy. The newspaper reported that Chloe McCarthy, 4, suffers from mild cerebral palsy and neurological injuries as a result of Dr. Garry C. Karounos’ failure to perform a cesarean section and continuance of a natural delivery before her birth in August 2009. In addition, Chloe’s mother, Erin McCarthy, suffered injuries that left her incontinent and unable to work. The family’s attorney said that Karounos failed to monitor signs that a C-section would have been necessary given the size of the baby. An ultrasound conducted four days before Chloe was born showed that the child weighed 10 pounds, which caused Erin to express concerns over her delivery. Plano Teen Injured at Birth Gaining National Attention

A Plano teen who suffered a brain injury at birth has made national headlines after police arrest a teenager in connection to a cyberbullying case against the girl. According to the Dallas Morning News, Shea Shawhan’s story has been featured on various news channels and outlets after news came out that she was being bullied online because of her disabilities. Police would not release information about the alleged juvenile bully, saying the youth was a Plano Independent School District student and that he or she is facing harassment charges, a class B misdemeanor. According to the Morning News, the bully reportedly sent texts to Shawhan that included messages such as “kill urself”, while telling the girl to have one of her “seizures and die”.
