The U.S. is the Most Dangerous Place in Developed World for Birthing

USA Today had a shocking report earlier this month claiming that the United States is the most dangerous place in the developed world to give birth. According to the investigative report, more than 50,000 mothers suffer severe injuries during childbirth each year and there are about 700 deaths. The news source reported that about half of these incidents could have been prevented or reduced in severity with better healthcare. The report suggests that maternal death and injury rates from other developed nations (including Germany, Japan and France) continue to fall, while the U.S. rate continues to rise. In 2015, it was 26.4 injuries per 100,000 births, according to USA Today. Botched Water Birth Lawsuit Settled for $13 Million

According to the Oregonian, the parents of a child who was deprived of oxygen for 15 minutes after his botched water birth have settled a lawsuit against their medical provider for $13 million. Court documents indicate that the parents went to the medical center, planning to give birth to the child underwater, with representatives saying…

In 2012, there were over 450,000 babies born preterm, and the estimated annual medical costs to care for these infants hovers just north of $26 billion. In 2012, almost a quarter of all U.S. births were to Hispanic women, and over 11 percent of those births were preterm. What is causing the Latino population to have significantly higher birth defect rates? One of the factors being cited for this anomaly may be related to food and nutrition. Neural tube defects (NTDs) are birth defects of the brain and spine, such as spina bifida and anencephaly, which often cause disability. There have been significant declines in NTDs across most ethnic groups in…
