Midwife’s Mistake Causes Baby’s Brain Injury, Child Dies Three Years Later

A couple’s decision to hire a midwife and have a home birth, a much cheaper alternative many women are now choosing over expensive hospital births, caused the eventual death of their son. The midwife the couple hired failed to call an ambulance when the mother began bleeding profusely, and the placenta abruption left the child with a permanent brain injury. “He was still unable to sit alone still unable to crawl, couldn’t stand couldn’t walk couldn’t speak,” the mother told Fox News. Doctor With Cerebral Palsy Able to Empathize With Children Who Have Cerebral Palsy

A doctor in St. Louis is not only offering hope to her cerebral palsy patients, but empathy as well. Dr. Jan Brunstrom-Hernandez founded the Cerebral Palsy Center at St. Louis Children’s Hospital 15 years ago, she also has cerebral palsy. Dr. Brunstrom-Hernandez says she was inspired at an early age to become a doctor because she was surrounded by them all the time as a child. However, she initially had no desire to treat people with cerebral palsy. She said her hesitation was due to the fact that she did not want to be around people that reminded her of her own condition. She was prompted to begin a clinic in 1997 after a fellow colleague, Dr. Mike Noetzel, also at the St. Louis Children’s Hospital, suggested she start one. She said she was doing research on cerebral palsy when she realized treatment had not progressed much since her diagnosis…

Illinois Mother Files Lawsuit Alleging Medical Negligence

A mother has filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois with allegations of medical negligence by the health care practitioners during her child’s birth. The plaintiff alleges that this medical negligence caused severe birth trauma and resulted in a diagnosis of Erb’s palsy. During her pregnancy, the Illinois mother developed fetal macrosomia— a term that is used to describe a newborn who is larger than 8 pounds, 13 ounces. Fetal macrosomia often makes traditional delivery difficult, thereby putting the baby at risk of birth trauma and brain injury. Certain precautions are used by medical professionals in other situations which involve fetal macrosomia in order to lessen this risk. This includes providing alternative methods of delivery, such as a C-section. The plaintiff’s newborn weighed 11 pounds, 11 ounces at birth. Due to the child’s large size, the newborn suffered a brachial plexus injury during…
