A recent study revealed that hospital design and layouts can have an impact on whether cesarean deliveries are ordered during the birthing process. According to Fast Times, the study conducted by Ariadne Labs, a health system innovation center, and MASS Design Group, looked into the physical designs of hospital labor and delivery units, and whether they could lead to a higher rate of cesarean deliveries. The researchers reviewed a dozen hospitals and birth centers in the U.S., compiling data such as distance between labor and delivery rooms (LDRs), number of available rooms, as well as healthcare data. Can You Sue Your Medical Provider If Your Child Dies Following Its Birth? Inmate Files Lawsuit after Alleged Botched Delivery

According to the Wichita Times Record News, a woman who was being held on drug charges in a county jail in Texas has filed a lawsuit after she delivered a baby who died while she was in solitary confinement. The newspaper reported that Nicole Guerrero is suing Wichita County, Sheriff David Duke, Correctional Healthcare Management, Inc. and Ladonna Anderson for breaching the duty of care owed to her, and for medical malpractice. Guerrero was being held in the Wichita County Jail in 2012 on a drug possession charge and was pregnant at the time. On June 11, she reportedly went to a doctor and was told the child had no complications. She was prescribed a medication and supplement by the doctor. Autism Diagnoses May Decrease Under Changes to Criteria

According to DisabilityScoop.com, the number of people diagnosed with autism could decrease by nearly one-third under new criteria for diagnosing the developmental disorder. The website reported that a new edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, known as the DSM-5, introduced extensive changes to the criteria for an autism diagnosis. The website reported that the changes include the deletion of “Asperger’s syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder and pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified, instead establishing an umbrella classification of ‘autism spectrum disorder’ with clinicians indicating a level of severity.” A new study by the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders has some experts worried that people who previously qualified for a diagnosis on the autism spectrum will be left out, due to the changes.
