The surgery, while expensive, often produces successful results. After raising over £60,000, a family in the United Kingdom can send their son to the United States for the SDR operation. Nicholas Bamforth, 9, has cerebral palsy. He and his family hope that the SDR operation will allow him to walk and possibly play football for his school team, fulfilling a lifelong dream. His family is planning on flying to the U.S. and staying for five weeks while he recovers from the operation. His family is still raising money to cover his physiotherapy that will likely continue long after the operation. Girl Born in Jail Suffers Birth Trauma Injuries

Wayne County has recently settled a birth trauma lawsuit filed by a woman who gave birth in jail. Chantrienes Barker went into labor in 1998 while incarcerated. Officers sent her to a hospital, but returned her to jail just two hours later. She and other inmates repeatedly urged guards to return her to the hospital, saying that her labor pains were increasing. She gave birth in jail, and her daughter now suffers from brain damage. Barker sued the county for violating her civil rights, and the county agreed to an $8 million settlement. The County’s Defense Initially, the county said that it was not responsible for the infant’s health due to a landmark abortion ruling. Since Roe V. Wade decided that life did not begin before birth, the county argued, jail officials had no responsibility to provide adequate care to Barker’s unborn child. Shoulder dystocia occurs during childbirth when the infant’s shoulder becomes trapped behind the mother’s cervix. There are certain shoulder dystocia risk factors that doctors should know about. If the mother exhibits any of these traits – diabetes, obesity, fetal macrosomia (large baby syndrome) or prolonged labor – doctors might recommend a C-section birth to avoid injury. One doctor in California failed to prevent shoulder dystocia, even though the mother exhibited multiple risk factors.
