Our Birth Trauma Lawyers Discuss the Dangers of Terbutaline and Autism in Infants

Terbutaline is a generic version of name-brand drugs Brethine and Bricanyl. The generic drug is commonly used “off label” to halt pre-term labor, lengthen pregnancy and prevent premature birth. Annually, approximately 1 million women are treated with terbutaline for this purpose. Terbutaline is actually used to treat asthma, making its use to control pre-term labor highly controversial. Some physicians contend that the drug is dangerous while others say it is no more effective at prolonging labor than a placebo. The US Food and Drug Administration has not approved uses of terbutaline for anything other than controlling asthma. Recent studies have raised concerns that the drug may have a profound, negative impact on an unborn baby’s brain development due to overstimulation of certain brain activity. Overstimulation could lead to autism, particularly in twins. Further, the study’s findings suggest that exposure to drugs like terbutaline early in development could leave the brains…

Birth Trauma Lawyers Sue Hospital for Causing Erb’s Palsy, Shoulder Dystocia

Shoulder dystocia occurs during childbirth when the infant’s shoulder becomes trapped behind the mother’s cervix. There are certain shoulder dystocia risk factors that doctors should know about. If the mother exhibits any of these traits – diabetes, obesity, fetal macrosomia (large baby syndrome) or prolonged labor – doctors might recommend a C-section birth to avoid injury. One doctor in California failed to prevent shoulder dystocia, even though the mother exhibited multiple risk factors. The mother developed diabetes during pregnancy, and the baby had a large birth weight. She was also in labor for several hours. She asked the doctor to perform a C-section, and the doctor refused. Shoulder dystocia occurred, and the baby developed Erb’s palsy. What is Erb’s Palsy? Erb’s palsy is a permanent condition caused by damage to the brachial plexus, a connection of nerves at the back of the neck that controls limb movement. People with Erb’s…

Study: One in Two Children With Cerebral Palsy Has Speech Disorder

After studying 129 children with cerebral palsy, Swedish researchers found that half of them suffered from some form of speech difficulty; 21 percent had a speech disorder, and 32 percent were nonverbal. Cerebral palsy often results from errors during labor. The researchers think that the error’s timing plays a role in the speech disorder’s severity. They looked at the correlation between brain injuries sustained during birth or pregnancy and the resulting speech problems. “Lesions acquired late in gestation, around or after birth, were most common in the nonverbal group, while periventricular white matter lesions, acquired late in the second and early in the third trimester, were most common in children without speech disorders,” the research team wrote in its report. Speech problems are just one obstacle facing children with cerebral palsy. Others include limited mobility, paralysis, paraplegia, cognitive disorders and learning impairments. In many cases, proper medical care can foresee…
