Real Housewives Star’s Child Dies After Shoulder Dystocia

A reality television star announced recently that her newborn son died during childbirth due to complications. According to Fox News, Kara Keough, a former star on the ‘Real Housewives of Orange County”, announced on her social media pages that her child died in April. “During the course of his birth, he experienced shoulder dystocia and a compressed umbilical cord. He joined our Heavenly Father and will live forever in the hearts of his loving parents, his adoring sister, and those that received his life-saving gifts,” Keough said on Instagram. The child reportedly weighed 11 pounds and 4 ounces, and was 21 inches long. Keough also announced that they would be donating his organs and tissue for life saving medical purposes for others. Woman Awarded $8.9 Million for Child’s Shoulder Dystocia

A Minnesota woman was awarded $8.9 million after her child was allegedly mishandled during his delivery, leading to shoulder dystocia. According to StarTribune.com, a Hennepin County jury awarded the mother compensation last month after she said a local healthcare provider and midwife ignored her concerns over the size of her baby prior to his birth. The child, born in 2016, severed a broken right arm and nerve damage during the birthing process. His mother claimed in the lawsuit that she had concerns about his large size, but a certified nurse-midwife said the boy was not that large during care sessions. However, when the delivery occurred, the child weighed 10.5 pounds, nearly 3 ponds larger than the average American birth weight. Dystocia is defined as difficult or slow delivery or labor.  Pregnancy complications like dystocia can lead to serious medical complications for both mother and baby.  When the baby is being delivered and the baby’s head is delivered but its shoulders are stuck inside the mother’s body, dystocia occurs.  Health care professionals cannot prevent dystocia, but they should be prepared to take action when it occurs.
