Birth Trauma Attorney Weighs In On Fraternal Twins With Autism

Parents Peter and Gaynelle Russert were more than surprised when they learned that at the ages of 40 and 44, respectively, they were going to be parents—and to twins nonetheless! The couple’s fraternal twins, Drew and Skyler, were almost four when they were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Skyler’s case was more severe than Drew’s, but with no family history of autism, Peter and Gaynelle began to question what other reasons could have caused this diagnosis. NBC reports that the family wondered whether environmental factors or possibly genetics caused the autism, but were never able to nail down one specific cause like most parents of children with autism. From an early age, Peter and Gaynelle involved the boys in medical studies, like a Stanford University investigation about fraternal twins with autism. Additionally, they began different forms of therapy and augmented the boys’ diet. Now 16, both Drew and Skylar…

Birth Injury Lawyers Examine Autism Studies

Two recent studies examined how factors in labor and pregnancy can cause or reduce the risk of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Autism and Folic Acid One study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), found that pregnant women who take folic acid during pregnancy reduce the chances of their children developing autism by up to 40 percent. Most of us ingest a form of folic acid quite frequently; in the U.S., many grain and cereal products contain folic acid supplements. Folic acid is a B vitamin that encourages healthy cell growth. The study examined births in Norway, where the consumption of folic acid is not as widespread as it is here, and found that children whose mothers who did not take the B vitamin supplements had increased rates of ASD, Aspergers and other developmental disabilities. Autism and Premature Birth While folic acid may decrease the risk of…

Research on Twins Finds Correlation Between Birth Weight, Autism

A researcher from Northwestern University in Illinois found that twins born with a low birth weight were three times more likely to develop autism spectrum disorder (ASD) than their heavier counterparts. Molly Losh from the Roxelyn and Richard Pepper Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Northwestern studied over 3,700 same-sex twin sets from the Child and Adolescent Twin Study of Sweden (CATSS). She found that heavier twins had a lower risk of developing certain birth defects like ASD; for every 100 grams, the child’s risk of developing ASD decreased by 13 percent. This research is significant, because medical professionals have long considered autism a genetic disorder. Losh’s research, however, indicates that environmental factors may play a larger role in the development of ASD than scientists previously thought. Often, one of the twins would develop ASD and the other would not; considering that many of these twins share the same…
