Study Suggests that C-Sections May Not Lessen Cerebral Palsy Risk

According to DisabilityScoop, contrary to popular belief, cesarean sections (C-sections) may not lower the risk of a baby developing cerebral palsy during childbirth. The website reported that a study conducted by the University of Adelaide in Australia, which was published in the December issue of the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology, found that babies delivered via C-section were no less likely to develop cerebral palsy than babies delivered naturally. Researchers reviewed 3,800 cases of children with cerebral palsy, reviewing those involving both elective and emergency situations. “For over a century it was assumed, without good evidence, that most cases of cerebral palsy were due to low oxygen levels or trauma at birth,” said Alastair MacLennan of the University of Adelaide in Australia who led the review, according to DisabilityScoop. “This systematic review of the literature clearly shows that the causes of cerebral palsy have little to do with mode of delivery….

Pennsylvania Family Awarded $4 Million for Cerebral Palsy Lawsuit

According to the Lehigh Valley Morning Call, a Pennsylvania family was awarded $4 million after an obstetrician caused a child to sustain birth injuries resulting in cerebral palsy. The newspaper reported that Chloe McCarthy, 4, suffers from mild cerebral palsy and neurological injuries as a result of Dr. Garry C. Karounos’ failure to perform a cesarean section and continuance of a natural delivery before her birth in August 2009. In addition, Chloe’s mother, Erin McCarthy, suffered injuries that left her incontinent and unable to work. The family’s attorney said that Karounos failed to monitor signs that a C-section would have been necessary given the size of the baby. An ultrasound conducted four days before Chloe was born showed that the child weighed 10 pounds, which caused Erin to express concerns over her delivery. Karounos reportedly assured the mother that there “was nothing to worry about”. When Erin was admitted to…

New Medical Breakthrough Gives Hope to Those with Cerebral Palsy

In an amazing medical breakthrough, doctors in Germany are the first in the world to successfully use stem cells to rehabilitate a young boy suffering with cerebral palsy. Before treatment, the child was in a vegetative state. Doctors administered the stem cell version of his blood directly back into his veins and began to study the changes in his brain cells at different times. Months after treatment, the boy’s symptoms improved greatly; the child has been able to eat without assistance, walk with the help of another person and even speak. The stem cell treatment has been shown to migrate to damaged brain tissue, causing them to repair themselves. This discovery could give millions that suffer from cerebral palsy hope for recovery. What is Cerebral Palsy? It is amazing that modern medicine has been able to give this child a better quality of life, because cerebral palsy is usually viewed…
