New Study Reveals Improvement In Motor Function In Children With Cerebral Palsy

A study conducted at the University of Alabama at Birmingham has shown major improvements in motor skills among children with cerebral palsy. Chelsey Sterling, a UAB grad student, authored the study and found that the treatment shows an increase in gray matter in the brain. Gitendra Uswatte, a co-author of the study, said that the treatment showed a remarkable improvement in the motor function of the affected limbs. The study used children from ages 2 – 7, who were administered the treatment over three weeks. The treatment itself requires the restraint of the unaffected limbs in a cast like device; the children are then instructed to use the affected limbs more. Sterling adds that this study shows the brains remarkable ability to heal itself. This is great news for people who suffer from disabilities that limit their body movement. Still, it is tragic that children have to grow up with a…

New Botox treatment helps boy with cerebral palsy walk for the first time

In an earlier post, we discussed a new treatment using Botox to help people with cerebral palsy. In an inspirational update on that treatment, 3-year-old Aiden Farrell took his first steps recently due to receiving Botox injections into the affected areas of his body. Botox uses tiny amounts of a toxin that attacks the nervous system, but in very small doses it relaxes the contraction of muscles in some people with cerebral palsy by blocking nerve impulses. Aiden has had health problems all his life after a traumatic birth in which he was born 29 weeks premature and had to be kept alive on a ventilator. When Aiden’s mother read about the treatment online, she placed Aiden on an 18-month waiting list and he was given 12 injections last December. Aiden was able to stand and walk for the first time with his legs straighter and even with his legs…

Mother Given Unneeded Drug during Birth Receives Payout from Negligent UK Hospital

In 2007, Portia Kupahurasa was admitted to the Doncaster Royal Infirmary to give birth to her son. However, Kupahurasa was given an intravenous drip during labor that contained the drug Syntocrin. This drug is commonly used to induce and help with delivery, but unfortunately it was not needed and caused Kapahurasa’s contractions to excessively strengthen. As a result, the force of her contractions deprived her baby, Darryl Munashe Kupahurasa, much-needed oxygen at birth. He was later diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a disability that affects his ability to walk, talk and process information. In a High Court ruling, Kupahurasa and her now 6-year-old son were awarded £2.45 million as well as annual payments that will increase as Munashe ages. A spokesperson for the National Health Service trust which paid for the hospital’s damages told BBC News, “We are deeply sorry for what happened and for the enormous impact it has had…
