Jail Neglects Woman Giving Birth

Most women who file for medical negligence due to a birth injury or other birthing problem bring their suit against a hospital or other medical professional. Imka Pope, however, brings her medical negligence suit against the King County Jail, which allowed Pope to give birth alone, on the jail floor, 14 years ago. According to SeattlePi.com, Pope suffers from schizoaffective disorder. During a psychotic episode when she was off her medication, Pope fell asleep on a Metro bus bench. Police arrested the nine-months-pregnant Pope for trespassing, and six days later, she gave birth. Documents show that only one person on staff in the jail noted that Pope appeared pregnant, and her lawyers state that officers and nurses made little effort to treat her schizoaffective disorder. Court Clears Doctor of Negligence

After almost eight days of deliberation the jury in a complicated multimillion dollar lawsuit returned with the verdict that Dr. Sam Olupona is not to blame for complications in the birth of a little boy that led to severe brain injuries. The parents of the boy filed suit against the hospital, Dr. Olupona and two hospital nurses claiming that when the mother was in labor with twins the doctor and nurses failed to monitor the babies heart rates, and did not ensure that the mother had an epidural in case of an emergency cesarean section and failed to make sure that an operating room was ready in case it was needed. Judgment Against New York Hospital in Medical Malpractice Case

          Strong Memorial Hospital in New York was recently ordered to pay $17 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit.
