The United Brachial Plexus Network (BPI) has released a documentary that warns of the potential birth risks that could lead to brachial plexus injuries. Newborn Birth Injuries: The Untold Story is now airing as a filler piece on PBS stations, with clips available on YouTube and the organization’s website. In the film, medical professionals explain how brachial plexus injuries occur and how to avoid them. The brachial plexus is a vital system of nerves located near the back of the neck and upper spine. The nerves deliver signals to upper arm and chest muscles. Damage in this region during childbirth can cause serious birth defects, including nerve damage, paralysis, lack of muscle control or sensation, or Erb’s palsy. A Surprising Birth Injury

A mom from Fergus Falls, MN, has learned what brachial plexus injury is in the hardest way possible, through having her newborn son. Carly Schiesser said she read all the books on pregnancy when she found out she was pregnant again, but not one mentioned the injury her son would suffer when he was born. Her son suffered an avulsion, or detachment from the spinal cord, of the nerves that control his hand, wrist and forearm, a rupture of the nerve with controls his elbow and a stretched nerve that controls shoulder function. This means that his arm is most likely going to be paralyzed for life. One of the most upsetting parts of this injury is that it likely could have been prevented. 1 in 200 babies is born with some form of birth injury, and many of these cases may have been caused by medical negligence. Extreme care must be taken by health professionals when delivering a newborn child. Birth injuries can be the result of mishandling during or before the birthing process. Because of the soft skull and brain tissue, an infants head can be very easily injured. Some of the common birth injuries include Cerebral Palsy and Erbs Palsy also called Brachial Plexus Injury or Shoulder Dystocia.
