According to a USA Today report that came out this summer, the U.S. is the most dangerous place in the developed world for a mother to give birth, as more than 50,000 mothers experience injuries and about 700 die during labor.

The news outlet reported that about half of these deaths could have been reduced or prevented with better healthcare. The report indicated that many of the injuries and deaths occurred when providers did not intervene quickly enough in high-risk incidents.

The report indicated that the maternal death and injury rate in the U.S. was 26.4 per 100,000 births in 2015. USA Today indicated that many states in the country have been slow in developing safety measures and regulations during the birthing process.

“The lack of action by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to protect mothers stands in sharp contrast to its more aggressive approach to trying to improve care for elderly Medicare patients,” the news outlet reported.

These protocols could include measuring blood loss or monitoring mothers who may experience hypertension with greater attention. To view the report, you can click on the source link below.

Delays in Medical Care Resulting in Injuries Are Unacceptable

If you’re an expecting mother, your doctor has a duty to accurately monitor complications during the delivery process that may result in injuries. It is unacceptable that the U.S. has a high injury and death rate among delivering women.

If you have been injured because a doctor failed to properly monitor your childbirth or your loved one has died as a result of medical malpractice, you could be entitled to compensation.

This compensation could help you pay for items like therapies or rehabilitation that can help you recover. Do not let a negligent healthcare provider off the hook, our Ryan Krebs, M.D., J.D., is uniquely qualified to handle medical malpractice cases.
