According to Fox News, Kara Keough, a former star on the ‘Real Housewives of Orange County”, announced on her social media pages that her child died in April.

“During the course of his birth, he experienced shoulder dystocia and a compressed umbilical cord. He joined our Heavenly Father and will live forever in the hearts of his loving parents, his adoring sister, and those that received his life-saving gifts,” Keough said on Instagram.

The child reportedly weighed 11 pounds and 4 ounces, and was 21 inches long. Keough also announced that they would be donating his organs and tissue for life saving medical purposes for others.

Shoulder Dystocia is Often Avoidable

Shoulder dystocia occurs when a baby’s head is delivered, and his or her shoulders are stuck behind the mother’s pelvic bone. Sadly, it is associated with various injuries and is often avoidable with detection. Shoulder dystocia incidents can occur because of errors on the part of medical providers.

Aside from death, shoulder dystocia can lead to stretching, tearing and nerve damage, resulting in long-term arm and hand injuries to children. These injuries often result in the extensive need for physical and occupational therapies throughout life.

If you have a larger baby, you are more likely to experience a shoulder dystocia event during labor. It is hard to find accurate statistics regarding shoulder dystocia because many experts think that incidents are underreported, as doctors and healthcare providers may fail to admit to mistakes or symptoms may arise in children later in life.
