Kiley Griggs is a 4-year-old girl with cerebral palsy. She is bound to a wheelchair and cannot walk, which makes things harder for herself and her parents.

“As you can tell, she works really, really hard trying to learn how to walk,” says Kiley’s mother Lori as father Jason bends over to help his daughter. “You can also see that it puts a lot of strain on Daddy and Mommy’s back working with her.”

Lori also points out that Kiley’s wheelchair weighs about 45 pounds, so any time they take Kiley anywhere, it is a tiring endeavor for both parents. Jason, a firefighter, already has four herniated discs in his neck. “One of these days I’m afraid that I won’t be able to lift my little girl to help her succeed in walking.”

They want to provide Kiley with chiropractic services to help with her scoliosis and hip dysplasia, but treatment would cost close to $3,000. They entered the Make a Comeback contest sponsored by the Laser Spine Institute in Tampa. The winner, decided by votes on YouTube and Facebook, receives $5,000 worth of spinal cord treatment.

The Griggs’ story is common for parents with children who have cerebral palsy. Oftentimes, a single mistake during childbirth – a lack of oxygen during labor, failure to notice certain warning signs – can cause permanent disabilities that affect everyone in the family. If you know someone with cerebral palsy, we may be able to help find a way to pay for the expensive treatment options. Call 1-800-460-0606 today to learn more.
