A federal jury in Pennsylvania awarded a 5-year-old girl and her parents $47 million earlier this year for disfigurement injuries suffered during birth. Image of baby hand

According to the New York Post, the girl’s lawsuit claims she was disfigured when hospital staff members wrapped her head with ACE Bandages that were too tight following her birth. She reportedly suffered severe scalp wounds and will need reconstructive surgery during her lifetime.

There are also reports indicating she will not be able to grow hair properly.

The couple involved in the lawsuit is from Texas and were traveling prior to the girl’s birth, when the mother had her prematurely at the Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown.

The lawsuit claims that the child was misdiagnosed with a subgaleal hemorrhage instead of a cephalohematoma by doctors at the hospital, thus resulting in her head being improperly bandaged.

Birth Injuries Can Lead to a Lifetime of Medical Costs

This story is a sad reminder that mistakes by medical providers can lead severe injuries for newborns.

Instances of disfigurement following birth can occur due to complications with compression materials or wraps, as well as forceps being used too strongly on a child’s skull. Additionally, complications during surgical procedures can result in child disfigurement.
