Ability Day Lets Those With Disabilities Play

The life of a person with birth defects like cerebral palsy can be incredibly challenging. So many options are closed to them that most people take for granted. One community in Kansas City is trying to give those with disabilities new ideas for what they might physically be capable of through an event they call Ability Day. Grandview’s Parks and Recreation Department hosts Ability Day, an annual event for individuals of all ages with disabilities and their families. They provide a variety of free activities, such as swimming, bike riding, basketball and other sports, all in an environment designed to accommodate those that would not normally be able to play them. Different styles of bicycles are available with different adaptations, depending on the need. There is even a rock-climbing wall. Danielle Coulter, 19, is attending Ability Day for the second time.
