Premature and Smaller Babies Tied to Cerebral Palsy Risk

According to a new study, premature and small babies born to mothers with preeclampsia during pregnancy are at increased risk for cerebral palsy. Researchers analyzed data from about 850 children with cerebral palsy. Children who were both born moderately preterm or very preterm and whose mothers had preeclampsia had a significantly increased risk of cerebral palsy, if they were also smaller than usual at birth. Preeclampsia is a dangerous condition involving high blood pressure and protein in the urine. It affects 3 to 5 percent of pregnant women. The results were the same after researchers adjusted factors such as the mother’s age, smoking during pregnancy, in vitro fertilization and the sex of the child. Cerebral Palsy Lawyer Reviews Case Claiming Substandard Care in Palm Beach County

Parents of a brain-injured baby have recently filed a birth injury suit against St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach. The suit alleges that the mother received substandard care, and as a result her baby acquired brain damage during delivery leading to his eventual diagnosis of cerebral palsy. According to the plaintiff, the hospital admitted the mother at six months pregnant with ruptured membranes. After two weeks in the hospital, nurses found a blockage in the mother’s IV tube and a declotting drug was administered. However, the mother had an allergic reaction to the drug, causing the fetal heart rate to drop. The doctors eventually ordered an emergency C-section nearly one hour after the mother’s allergic reaction. After birth, MRI scans showed that his brain has been injured. Lawmaker Promises Change After State Supreme Court Tosses Cerebral Palsy Rape Case

She is 29 years old, and throughout a recent court testimonial, she could only communicate by pointing at letters to spell words, or by pointing to the words “yes” and “no.” It took her four days to finish her testimony. She was testifying against Richard Fourtin Jr., a man who she says sexually assaulted her. He was dating her mother at the time. The Connecticut Supreme Court sided with Fourtin, claiming that L.K. still could have communicated her refusal despite her ability to talk.
